Align Your Business with the Positive Health Benefits of Tennis

Tennis is a healthy lifestyle option for our population.  The British Journal of Sports Medicine reported the following conclusions to a 2007 study, “…people who choose to play tennis appear to have significant health benefits, including improved aerobic fitness, a lower body fat percentage, a more favorable lipid profile, a reduced risk for developing cardiovascular disease, and improved bone health.”

Tennis players scored higher in vigor, optimism, and self-esteem while scoring lower in depression, anger, confusion, anxiety, and tension than other athletes or non-athletes, according to Dr. Joan Finn and colleagues in a study done at Southern Connecticut State University.

A study appearing in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that rates of obesity in children and adolescents have more than tripled, from 5% in the 1970s to 18% today.  The Surgeon General warned that risk factors for heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, low self-esteem, and depression are linked to childhood obesity.  Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults.

Participate in Your Community

The Barnes Junior Tennis Center and all the events and programs directed at the Center are organized and managed by Youth Tennis San Diego (YTSD).  YTSD is a non-profit (501 C3) organization that touches the lives of over 7,000 youngsters annually through its After-School and Educational Programs at the Barnes Center and at over 100 schools in San Diego County.  YTSD is the designated recipient of all USTA Girls’ Nationals profits.

The USTA Girls’ National Championships represents a comprehensive effort to bring national-caliber tennis to the San Diego Area.  The event is made possible by the synergy of our volunteers and sponsors, each providing the manpower and financial backing necessary to put on a tournament at this level of excellence.

Promote the Pursuit of Excellence Demonstrated by the Competitors in The Nationals

The young women who participate in the USTA Nationals are dedicated to the pursuit of both academic and athletic excellence.

  • All plan on attending college and/or pursuing a professional tennis career.
  • 88% have a 3.5 or higher GPA and are striving for an athletic scholarship.
  • 83% play tennis two or more hours every day.

The USTA Nationals recognizes not only the champions, but those who display outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the court in their interaction with their opponents, tournament staff, and guests of the event.  We present the USTA Sportsmanship Award in both the G16s and G18s, as well as The Molden Family Sportsmanship (G16s) and Tournament Committee Sportsmanship Award (G18s).  Additionally, we have the honor of presenting The Maureen Connolly Brinker Award to the Girls’18s player who has had the most outstanding tournament season, while demonstrating exemplary sportsmanship.
